Types of Halloween jobs
Halloween event work covers a range of roles, from creative performance to standard event operations. The biggest events - Tulleys Farm Shocktober Fest in West Sussex, Alton Towers Scarefest in Staffordshire, Thorpe Park Fright Night in Surrey and Blackpool Tower Halloween - each take on dozens of crew across multiple roles. Smaller scare events, Halloween light trail events at National Trust properties and farm park events fill the rest of the calendar.
Scare actors and performers work inside scare mazes and haunted houses at fright-night events. The role requires dramatic ability, physical stamina and the ability to work in confined spaces for extended periods. Costume and character briefings are provided by the event. Scare actors are often the highest-paid Halloween crew role and are booked through specialist scare casting companies as well as direct through event organisers.
Fright-night event stewards manage crowd flow, queuing and safety at scare events. The role uses standard stewarding skills and pays at similar rates to festival stewarding. Most large scare events - Scarefest, Fright Night, Shocktober Fest - take on significant numbers of stewards each October.
Halloween light trail crew build and steward Halloween-themed illuminated trail events at parks, gardens and country estates. National Trust properties and similar venues across the UK run spooky light trails through autumn. Build crew installs the lighting rigs in August and September; steward crew manages visitors once the event opens. Both are paid day-rate roles.
Pumpkin patch and farm event staff work at pick-your-own farms and farm parks through September and October. Roles include stall crew, tractor ride operators, ticket staff and car park marshals. The season starts early September and runs through Halloween weekend. Farm events are typically booked local.
Bar and hospitality crew at Halloween-themed parties, bars and event venues see a spike in demand through October, peaking on and around 31 October. Rates are at the higher end of the event hospitality range.
When the Halloween season runs
The scare season has a longer lead time than most crew expect. Light trail installation work starts in August and September. Pumpkin patches open in September and run through Halloween. Scare events - the fright nights and haunted house events at theme parks and standalone scare attractions - open in October, typically running 2 to 6 weeks depending on the event. Halloween parties and bar work peaks in the final week of October and the weekend of the 31st. The season ends in early November.
Google searches for Halloween jobs peak in September, which is the window when most companies are building their teams.
